Lance and Brandy Family wanting to adopt a child

Hello! We are Chris and Katy

We will never know all the complex feelings you must be having around the decisions you will be making. We can only say how much we respect you for making this choice. We have had to trust our hearts before, but never like this. We can only emphasize that we know your decisions will be made with love and wanting only the best for this child. We will never understand the leap of faith it is be to trust two strangers to care for your child. We can only say that we hope we will not be strangers for long.

OUR LETTER

Dear Expectant Parents,

We will never know all the complex feelings you must be having around the decisions you will be making. We can only say how much we respect you for making this choice. We have had to trust our hearts before, but never like this. We can only emphasize that we know your decisions will be made with love and wanting only the best for this child. We will never understand the leap of faith it is be to trust two strangers to care for your child. We can only say that we hope we will not be strangers for long.

Let’s get to know each other- we are Chris and Katy!
Chris is a California native who grew up in multiple locations on the west coast. He considers San Diego, California his childhood home but also spent parts of his childhood in Phoenix, Arizona and Bountiful, Utah (outside of Salt Lake City). Chris’s parents are still married, and are looking forward to celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary this year.  Chris has one younger sister who is married and they have several four legged children. Chris’ family live in the area and we frequently get together for Sunday dinners. Chris graduated law school in 2015 after having a rewarding career as a communications teacher and debate coach at a local university. He enjoys his career helping make a positive difference for society. Chris’s hobbies are reading the newspaper, going to the movies, and anything do do with Star Wars.

Katy is an Oregon native and has lived in the Pacific Northwest most of her life. The two exceptions were when she and her family lived in Germany for two years when she was in elementary school and in Mexico for a year after college. Katy is very close with her family- her two brothers (one of whom is adopted) and their families and many extended relatives. We all get together often both in Portland and at the family beach house. Katy is a social worker, which is a job she loves and feels privileged to be able to work with children and their families. Katy’s hobbies are crafting, shopping, and going on walks with friends. We also have our shared hobbies including getting together for potlucks and playdates with friends and their children, spending time with Katy’s niece and nephew, and traveling.

Katy and Chris met in 2011 through via an online dating website. Their first date was a local eatery and Katy was pretty happy when Chris emailed her the next day asking for a second date. We knew pretty quickly we had some very important things in common- we both wanted our work to make a positive difference, we both value education and lifelong learning, we both had traveled extensively but wanted to do more, and we both wanted children! Chris fell in love with Katy because of her pretty blue eyes, outgoing personality, and shared value system. Katy fell in love with Chris because of his nice smile, incredible intelligence, and his wonderful family. We were married in Hawaii in 2013 and plan to return at each major anniversary!

We adopted our daughter via open adoption in 2016. She is the light of our lives! Our daughter is precocious, smart, funny, giggly, and very opinionated. We have loved watching her personality emerge (really since Day 1) and marveling at the speed at which she learns and the wonder at which she approaches the world. Being parents of an adopted child is such an honor! We have so much love for her birth parents and see her and her family when it works for all of us. In between visits we send pictures and email updates, read books about adoption, and incorporate them into our daily conversations. Our daughter’s biological family will always be welcome in our lives!

We live in Portland in a wonderful, safe neighborhood. We both love Portland for it’s proximity to our families and close friends, diversity of people and food, and the wonderful things to do- all within a short drive! We can’t imagine living anywhere else and we have put down roots here. We have wonderful friends (most of whom have children of their own) who we see at least once a week! We are close enough to family that most of the major holidays and celebrations are spent with one or both sides of our family! We also have our own traditions- we love to go to baseball games in the summer and watching a lot of college football in the fall. In the winter we go to hockey games and the zoo lights and in the spring we work in the yard and go to the farmer’s markets. A couple of times a year we visit friends in Seattle and also hit the open road in search of adventure!

We are so excited about adopting again and are lucky to have the support of our families and friends! We believe the best thing for any child is to be surrounded by as many wonderful, caring people as possible! Open adoption fits so naturally into that belief, we will consider ourselves lucky to have the opportunity to build a relationship with you and your loved ones. Our parenting will reflect our values- respect, love, compassion, hard work, family, acceptance, trust, and a lot of humor. We hope you feel you have learned a little more about us and we thank you for taking the time to read this letter. We are thrilled about this new chapter of our lives and the amazing child it will bring!

Sincerely,

Chris and Katy
